Teen wife charged in North Topsail murder gets $1 million bond

NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, N.C. -

A 19-year-old woman charged with stabbing a man to death on North Topsail Beach in July faced a judge Wednesday morning.

Bekka Shellhammer is now in jail under a $1 million bond. She's charged with the murder of 31-year-old Christopher Stewart.

Two months ago, someone found Stewart and Shellhammer's husband, Robert, dead on North Topsail Beach. Both men had multiple stab wounds.

At the time, locals speculated the two men had gotten into a fight that got out of hand. But deputies now say they believe Bekka Shellhammer played an active role. However, they have yet to reveal who they believe killed her husband.

Her next court date is October 9th.

The woman who called 911 described a frightening scene leading up to the fatal double stabbing at North Topsail Beach on Thursday.

North Topsail Beach police found Robert Clinton Shellhammer IV and Christopher William Stewart, both 31 from Sneads Ferry, dead from stab wounds on July 25 on a stretch of sand between Ocean Drive and the Village of Stump Sound. Police believe they died after fighting with each other.

The 911 caller described a woman who ran up to her on the beach, crying and bleeding from the hand, who said her husband had just been stabbed.

When the 911 operator asked why the husband thought she was dead, the caller said she did not know. "I understand these questions might seem kind of odd, but I'm just trying to update the officers and the EMS units," the operator said.

Both stab victims were convicted felons. Shellhammer was convicted of assault on a child and indecent liberties with a child in 2003, while Stewart was convicted of delivering or selling schedule two drugs in 2011.

North Topsail Beach town manager Stuart Turille says there was talk of a woman and her husband being jumped on the beach that night by a man with a knife.

When police arrived to the each on Thursday, they found the bodies of Shellhammer and Stewart about 100 feet from each other. It is unclear who that woman was, or who may have stabbed whom.

Police are investigating the stabbing deaths of two men.

North Topsail Beach Police said they responded to the beach strand area between Ocean Drive and the Village of Stump Sound, located off of NC Hwy 210 on Thursday night around 10:40 p.m. in reference to a possible stabbing.

When officers arrived on the scene, they located 2 male subjects, deceased on the beach strand. The names of the deceased are being withheld at this time.

"I think it's very unusual. It's very out of character for anything I've ever experienced in coming to the beach most of my life. I'm originally from North Carolina and this is just way odd," said North Topsail Beach visitor Carlene Bechen of Brooklyn, Wisconsin.

The incident is still under investigation, but authorities said they don't believe that there exists an imminent threat to the safety of the citizens and guests of this the surrounding communities. They added that they are not actively searching for any suspects.

"Statistically in the summer, our population goes from 800 to 15,000. Statistically we will have some incidents," said North Topsail Beach town manager Stuart Turille.

If you have any information about the case, please contact North Topsail Beach Police at (910) 328-0042, or the Onslow County Sheriff's Department at (910) 455-3113.
