RALEIGH, N.C. -

Kieran Shanahan's resignation from his post as Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety went into effect Wednesday.

Shanahan resigned, in part, to focus on his law firm.

Gov. Pat McCrory accepted Shanahan's resignation Thursday, July 25.

"The department is stronger now than when Kieran started and we appreciate his service," said Governor McCrory in a written statement. "I will continue to value Kieran's friendship. He has been an important part of the team.

McCrory named Shanahan as Secretary of Public Safety in December 2012.

"I have been honored to serve the governor and this great state and to have been a part of a great cabinet team," said Shanahan in a written release. "I am leaving the department stronger than when I took over in January. I am particularly proud of our efforts to start The Center for Safer Schools."

Shanahan's wife was also given a promotion to Admiral in the United States Navy.

DPS will be managed by the executive team of Deputy Secretaries until the new secretary is named.
