Scamming Elders Through Medicare

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, N.C. -

Beware the next time your phone rings. Deputies say a new scam is making the rounds and it seems to target older people on Medicare.

"They're taking advantage of elderly people." Calvin Waters is a professional carpet cleaner in the East and Beaufort County deputies say he's a victim of a Medicare scam.

"I got a call about 10 or 11 o' clock. I saw that it was a 954 area code and the guy was asking me where I purchased my test strips." Waters said.

He is a diabetic and buys his strips from an area retail store.

"He said, we can change that, you can purchase them from us. I said, oh really and he said, what is your Medicare number and Humana number?"

That's when Waters hung up. Waters says he called back to verify the company's true identity, only to find out it was a scam.

9 On Your Side made the call too, but after several attempts, we got a standard voice message.

Maj. Kenneth Watson with the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office says scams target the elderly often and offers this advice.

"The key is to slow down. Figure out if this is legitimate, do some research before you give out any of that information." Watson said.

Luckily this time, the victim out-smarted the scammer. "It's a rip off; somebody is getting rich out of that. I hope that others won't get ripped off or give their ID number.
