Local sorority helps educate seniors about scams

GREENVILLE, N.C. -

On Saturday, the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated hosted an elder care scam forum.

Event organizer, LaTonya Gaskins, says the forum is part of the sorority's National Elder Care initiative.

"We'd like to do more in regards to the elderly population. So, a part of our elder care initiative is to not only prevent these things from happening to our community, but also to provide education to members of the community," said Gaskins.

Saturday's event featured discussion about what scams are out there and how to avoid them.

For Pitt County resident, Ronald Frank he says knowing what's out there is half the battle.

"Education is the only way to keep yourself from getting in trouble," said Frank.

The Pitt County District Attorney's Office also brought in their expertise to help give advice to seniors.

Gaskins say they are working to hold more elder care events in the coming months.
