Domestic dispute leads to felony conviction

Posted: Updated:
NEW BERN, N.C. -

Stacy Lynn Hardy, 39, of New Bern, was convicted and sentenced in Craven County Superior Court this week for Felony Burning of Personal Property.

In November 2012, Hardy and her boyfriend, James Handcock, lived together, and on that day were drinking for some period of time. They began to argue, and Hardy lit on fire one of Handcock's favorite hats. She then threw it on the couple's bed, shut the bedroom door and left the house. The hat set the bed, and eventually, the house, on fire.

Hardy was sentenced to a suspended term of at least five months in prison, with supervised probation for 18 months and imposed a requirement that she not consume any alcohol during that time.
