LUMBERTON, N.C. -

Robeson County sheriff's deputies are investigating the murder of a sheriff's office employee, and they say the woman's husband is responsible.

According to Sheriff Ken Sealey, 42-year-old Jennifer Ellinger was shot and killed inside a home off U.S. Highway 301 north of Lumberton around 9:30 p.m. Monday.  Sealey said she was there with a friend, when her estranged husband came to the home and an argument started.

Sheriff Sealey said 48-year-old James Ellinger, of St. Pauls, had been separated from his wife for a few months.  Sealey said Ellinger killed his wife and then left the scene.

Deputies were notified after Noon Tuesday that Ellinger killed himself with a gun in Harnett County, Major Howard Branch said.

According to the sheriff, Mrs. Ellinger began working in the records department in his office in 2010.

Sealey said the investigation continues.
