Rocky Mount police officer suspended due to federal gun charge

Posted: Updated:

The Rocky Mount police officer accused of arranging illegal gun purchases has been suspended without pay, according to town police chief David Cundiff.

Slate, and Henry County licensed gun dealer and pawn shop owner, David Haskins, are federally charged in what the ATF says was a scheme where Haskins provided the money, and Slate recruited six other police officers to use Haskins' money to buy guns at discount prices, federal court papers claim.

The discounts were because they were police officers, investigators said.

Only the ATF says the officers filled out paperwork involved in the purchases where they claimed they wanted to keep the guns for themselves.

Instead, federal investigators claim, the officers would turn them over to Slate and Haskins.

Haskins would then sell the guns on-line for profit.

Haskins owns Southern Gun, Incorporated in Henry County.

The officers got $100 for each "straw purchase," investigators confirmed.

We're told those six officers are considered to be "cooperating witnesses," meaning they won't face charges as long as they keep telling the truth.

Each of the six officers told investigators Slate and Haskins lied to them, leading them to believe what they were doing was okay.
