RALEIGH, N.C. -

A protest against the recent abortion bill signed by Gov. Pat McCrory took an unexpected turn Tuesday when the governor came out of the Governor's Mansion with a plate of cookies for the women.

Photos on the Planned Parenthood Twitter feed captured the moment, with McCrory – flanked by security guards – handing the cookies to several women.

The women wore 1960s apparel as part of a protest that the Republican-led measures were taking women back decades.

Irene Godinez, who said she was at the event, said on Twitter that McCrory came out with five guards, holding a plate of cookies. "He motioned to us, handed over a plate of cookies [said] God bless."

On Twitter, #letthemeatcookies began to appear in tweets discussing the event. Planned Parenthood Action Fund of Central North Carolina wrote, "We want healthcare, not cookies," in one tweet.

McCrory returned to the Mansion after delivering the cookies.

McCrory signed a bill tightening abortion regulations into law Monday night.
