Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, N.C. -

Authorities have identified the man killed in an overnight fire at a Washington apartment complex.

Officials tell 9 On Your Side that the victim has been identified as 59-year-old Larry Dickerson of 203 Quail Drive.  An autopsy is scheduled and the investigation into the origin and cause of the fire is ongoing.

"I was shocked.  It's disturbing, sad.  I was just hoping everyone else was safe," said Abbie Parker, a neighbor who lives along Quail Dr.  Parker says the community will now have to come together.

"We're going to try and see what everybody is going to do, as a community, to try and help out," said Parker.

The American Red Cross is assisting several residents displaced by the fire.

One person is dead after an overnight fire at a Washington apartment complex.

Washington Fire Chief Robbie Rose tells 9 On Your Side, firefighters got the call about a fire at an apartment building on Quail Drive just after 12:30a.m. Wednesday.

When they got there, heavy flames were coming out of the front and back side of one of the upstairs units.  Chief Rose says it looked like the fire had been burning for awhile before anyone noticed and called it in.

Firefighters aggressively attacked the fire and put it out.  During their search of the unit, firefighters found one person dead inside.

Chief Rose tells us the building has four different units; only one of them seemed to be unoccupied at the time.  He says five people had to be evacuated.

The Red Cross is helping three of the residents with temporary lodging, food, and clothing.

Firefighters are still investigating what caused the fire.  We're told the building was heavily damaged due to the extensive burning that took place before crews were called to the scene.

Authorities are working to notify family members before releasing the identity of the person who was killed.
