CARY, N.C. -

Dr. Jim Merrill takes over as Wake County Schools' new superintendent today.

Merrill takes over for former superintendent Tony Tata, who was fired by the school board last year.

Merrill served as superintendent of schools in Virginia Beach, but he has previous experience in Wake County. He left in 2000 to become superintendent of Alamance-Burlington Schools, and then took his job in Virginia Beach in 2006.

As Wake County superintendent, Merrill will oversee nearly 170 schools educating nearly 150,000 students.

Merrill will hold a press conference Thursday afternoon at 4:30 at Wake County Schools Headquarters in Cary.
