Craven County lays off 5 teacher assistants

NEW BERN, N.C. -

The Craven County Board of Education announced that 5 teacher assistants are losing their jobs because of state budget cuts. The state handed down a $1.2 million cut to the county, which they say can't be absorbed.  The county says strategic planning minimized the number of layoffs, but it wasn't enough.

In a statement school officials said, "It is with great sadness that we have to deliver this news to our Craven County Schools family as we continue to struggle with the ongoing effects of these severe state budget cuts."

The district also decided to freeze all teacher assistant positions until further notice. The last day for the 5 teacher assistants is Monday, August 5, 2013.
