Reward offered in Pitt County hole-in-the-wall break-in

Posted: Updated:

Thieves targeted yet another Pitt County business by cutting a hole in one of the store's walls.
It's the second time a crime like this has happened this week.

Friday morning's break-in happened at Poorman's Restaurant inside the Poorman's Flea Market on Highway 264 between Greenville and Washington.

The restaurant owner said he's feeling lucky, because while the business was broken into, he doesn't keep much cash on hand.

"I've learned to take all the money home with me or to the bank with me," said Ken Willoughby, owner. "The joke's really on these guys. They got us for some, but thank God nobody was injured. That was the most important thing."

He also said the store doesn't have a surveillance system and the thieves cut the alarm.
There have been more than a dozen break-ins in Pitt, Martin and Edgecombe counties since last fall. In each case, the robber cut a hole in the wall to get inside.

Now, the Pitt County Sheriff's Office is calling the case one of their top priorities.  They're working with other counties to compile evidence.  They say they're making progress but could not comment on whether any of the crimes were connected or if it was all done by one criminal.

The Pitt County Crimestoppers is now offering up to $5,000 to anyone with information that leads to an arrest.  You can contact them anonymously at 252-758-7777.
