Consumer Reports gives local hospitals low scores

Posted: Updated:

A new report finds well-known hospitals may not always be the safest for surgery.

Consumer Reports rated the surgical care at nearly 2,500 hospitals across the country. Some of the nation's top hospitals fell short of many small hospitals when it came to complications and overall quality of care.

The report used Medicare claims and clinical records from 86 kinds of surgery. Some big name hospitals that received low ratings question the methods of how the data were collected and compiled.

"Teaching hospitals overall don't do any better than community hospitals in terms of keeping patients from harm after surgery," said Dr. John Santa, Medical Director for Consumer Reports. "But we think it's important for consumers to know that there is this variation and that they need to get information, ask questions and do everything they can to have the best result when they are having surgery that they are electing to have. that they are choosing to have."

So, 9 On Your Side wants to know how some of the hospitals in the east stack up under the Consumer Reports results. On a scale from better to worse, only seven hospitals in North Carolina received a "better" score. Carolina East in New Bern, Cartaret General Hospital, and Lenoir Memorial hospitals each received a middle score, not better nor worse. But Onslow Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville and Vidant Medical Center in Greenville both received low scores of "worse."

You can find the full report HERE.

President of Vidant Medical, Steve Lawler responded to the findings. "We use these reports, as really a data point. So we use these to compare how we're doing against other data sources as well as organizations that rate hospitals."

Lawler pointed out the data is 3 years old, but Consumer Reports says this is the most current data available, since compiling it is a rigorous process. "No data is perfect, but we think it's important that there is this variation." Dr. Santa said.

Lawler agreed with Dr. Santa and encourages all consumers to do their research, he also touted the awards Vidant recently received. US News ranked them as one of the best hospitals in North Carolina. 9 On Your Side contacted Onslow Memorial declined to comment on the study's findings.
