Additional charges filed against SUV operator in fatal Jacksonville motorcycle accident

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -

Additional charges have been filed against an SUV operator involved in a fatal motorcycle accident Monday evening in Jacksonville.

Police say they filed additional charges of one count of Felony Death by Vehicle and Felony Serious Injury by Vehicle (for injuries sustained by the passenger of the motorcycle) against 32-year-old Michael R. Jones, the operator of the SUV involved in the incident. He was previously charged with  DWI and Safe Movement Violation Causing Serious Injury to a Motorcyclist.

Jones in in the Onslow County Jail under a $75,000 bond.

They accident happened on Highway 17 at Barden Street.

Police say the 2009 Ford Flex SUV operated by Jones was traveling North in the center turn lane about to make a left turn onto Barden Street as a 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling in the left travel lane on US 17 Southbound.  Jones didn't yield to the motorcycle, making a left turn in front of it. That's when the front of the motorcycle struck the SUV. 

21-year-old Matthew McClain, the operator of the motorcycle, died at the scene.  His passenger, 21-year-old Katherine Collins was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center with serious injuries.  She's currently listed in fair condition.

The crash remains under investigation.
