Scam Alert: Caller claims lawsuit to get your money

Posted: Updated:

One woman in eastern North Carolina wants to warn others about a lawsuit scam.

The woman, who didn't want to be identified, says someone called her at work claiming they were from a "civil investigation unit". The caller said someone was suing her and she owned $7,000. The caller then went on to ask for personal information like her license number and bank information. When she asked the caller for more information, he threatened to send law enforcement to her job. Luckily, the woman said a red flag went off and she hung up.

The woman then did some investigating of her own and realized the call was a scam. So, she contacted 9 On Your Side to let us know about it.

9 On Your Side did some digging of our own to find out more about where these calls were coming from. When we called the number the first time, someone did pick up, but refused tell us any information without getting permission from the woman who contacted us. When we called back several different times, with our anonymous victim, all the extensions said the mailboxes were not set up and to call back later.

President of the Better Business Bureau serving eastern North Carolina, Toby Backfield, says scammers are using more aggressive tactics to get access to your information.

"This particular kind of scam … they get pretty rough pretty fast. The idea is to typically scare the heck out of you, so that you can't even think straight, and they threaten you with prison time," said Barfield.

Barfield says if you receive this type of call do the following:

1.) Ask the caller for the name and company they represent.

2.) Find a legitimate number for the company

3.) Call and verify the company exists and the caller works as a collector for that company.

4.) When in doubt, don't give out your personal information over the phone.
