2 men shot during robbery of illegal gambling operation in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said two men were shot during the course of a robbery at an underground gambling location Wednesday morning.

Cumberland County sheriff's deputies responded to a shooting call in the 4500 block of Cumberland Road in Fayetteville.

Witnesses told the sheriff's office an attempted armed robbery resulted in the two men being shot. Authorities said the injured men were transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment.

The sheriff's office said both men were in the intensive care unit at the hospital.

Cumberland County Sheriff Earl "Moose" Butler said, "I am very concerned about robberies, other crimes of violence, and other criminal activity associated with these illegal gambling operations."

Prior to this shooting, Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said deputies had been investigating illegal gambling and sweepstakes operations.  Deputies seized four illegal video gambling devices and other paraphernalia related to the robbery and shooting at the Cumberland Road address.

"This illegal gambling operation was going on in a neighborhood and next to a church," Butler said. "This makes it clear that such activity cannot continue to be tolerated, and that we need the help of the public in reporting these kinds of actions to us so that we can investigate and stop crime."
