NC Eastern Region to become a private agency

Posted: Updated:

Lawmakers in Raleigh are ending funding to local economic development groups, but today one of those groups announced they are not going away. The group called North Carolina's Eastern Region is making the transition from a public economic development agency to a private non-profit.

The group will now focus on workforce development, attracting certain businesses to our area, and advocating for Eastern North Carolina's interest.

"Individual communities cannot go out on their own and be able to achieve a level of success that we need to create jobs in Eastern NC. There is a definite need for a regional approach to economic development."  John Chaffee, President of the NC Eastern Region, told 9 On Your Side.

The organization will no longer focus on tourism development and creating a state film commission.
