NICKELSVILLE, VA (WJHL) -

A Southwest Virginia couple is in jail accused of severely abusing a toddler.

Scott County dispatchers received a call on Tuesday from someone concerned about the welfare of 14-month-old child.

According to the Sheriff's Office, that call prompted officers to go the home of Crystal Gail Smith, 1560 Sabras Chapel Road, Nickelsville, VA.

When officers arrived they found a 14-month-old boy with two black eyes, bruising on his arm and a knot on his head.

The Department of Social Services responded to the home and took the child to Holston Valley Medical Center. Officers say the boy was then transferred to The University of Tennessee Medical Center to receive specialized care.

Investigators tell News Channel 11, that the injuries happened days earlier at the hands of the mother's live in boyfriend, and no one had sought treatment for the child's injuries.

Thursday, deputies arrested 22 year-old Crystal Gail Smith and charged her with felony abuse and neglect.

Officers tracked down Smith's boyfriend later in the day.

Investigators say 29-year-old Donald Wayne Snodgrass is charged with two counts of aggravated malicious wounding of a child, and felony abuse and neglect.

More charges are expected.
