Cleaning their way into the new school year

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Students, staff, and volunteers braved the dreary weather on Saturday to lend a helping hand.

Their goal was to clean up the outside of Elmhurst Elementary School just in time for the school year.

Volunteers helped power wash the outside of the school, picked up weeds, and laid down mulch around the school.

Principal Colleen Burt says part of the goal of using volunteers to landscape is to help save money to build a gym for the students. It's the idea of a gym that brought out sixth-grader Alyssa Lemon.

"It's a tradition, you know, we need to help out. If you want a gym and all that, if you're not going to help the school, why would need that stuff? If you want that stuff you have to work for it," said Lemon.

Burt says there is still a lot to get finished; so, they expect to be back at it on Sunday to finish the work.

School starts on Thursday.
