County grand jury has indicted two teenagers charged with first-degree murder
in the January deaths of Jose Samual Flores Mendoza and his wife, Maria Saravia
Vasquez and Jonathan Santillan are both charged with two counts of first-degree
murder, and one count each of conspiracy to commit murder, first-degree
burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary and possession of a firearm with an
altered serial number.
who was 15 at the time of the murders, is also charged with assault with a
deadly weapon with intent to inflict serious injury. Vasquez, who was 16 at the
time of the murders, is also charged with possession of a stolen firearm.
say Maria and Jose Mendoza were unintended victims of a gang dispute when they
were murdered Jan. 5 in the 700 block of Colonial Drive near Garner.
Authorities believe a high-ranking gang member used to the live at the
residence and may have been the intended target.
to warrants, Vasquez used a .45mm Caliber Pistol with an obliterated serial
number and a 7.62mm military-type rifle, which is believed to have been stolen.
Vasquez and Santillan will be charged as adults. Their cases had previously
been in juvenile court.
