SW Onslow football deals with tragedy

Posted: Updated:
JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -

It has been a roller coaster ride for the Southwest Onslow football program these past nine months. The Stallions won the state championship in December but lost their quarterback and leader, Shak Pershey in the offseason.

Back in May, Pershey drowned in an incident at Topsail Beach. He was one of the top quarterbacks in the state and was set to graduate just days later from Southwest Onlslow High School. As you can imagine this accident was devastating for the whole Jacksonville community.

Shak threw for nearly 1,200 yards with 13 touchdowns and ran for nearly another 1,000 with 18 scores. But more than the stats on the field, Shak will be remembered for his leadership and friendliness there in Stallion Country.

That's why coach Phil Padgett has decided to dedicate this year to his former star. It's Southwest Onslow vs Jacksonville in our game of the week this week on Touchdown Friday and Shak will be in everyone's thoughts.

At the Stallion practice on Wednesday coaches weren't shying away from the tragedy.
