Coast Guard investigates after 7 rescued

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -

(AP) - The Coast Guard is investigating what happened to cause a yacht to take on water requiring the rescue of 7 people.

The Coast Guard says it received a signal early Sunday that a 150-foot yacht had lost steering and was taking on water 14 miles east of Ocracoke Inlet.

Duty Officer Craig Sanders says a crewmember's fingertips were severed while trying to stop the flooding. That man was flown to a hospital by a Coast Guard helicopter. The other six people were taken aboard Coast Guard boats that responded.

The water was pumped from the yacht and it was brought to a marina.
