Greene County Middle returns to school for first time since tornado

Posted: Updated:

Students returned to Greene County Middle School for the first time since a tornado destroyed the school on April 16th 2011.

For the past 2.5 years students had been learning in mobile units, but today students started the school year inside the new and improved building. Teachers only had two weeks to get moved in before school started. Some were even at school late Monday night preparing for the big day.

Nobody was at school on the Saturday the tornado hit, but the school sustained the most severe damage in the cafeteria and gymnasium. Officials told 9 On Your Side that they suspect a mobile home hit the gym during the storm. The gym is now completely rebuilt and features new floors and scoreboards. It even has new amenities like air conditioning.

Principal Norman McDuffy spoke on getting back in the building, "I'll be honest, we were in the modular unit.  We did a good job to utilize that particular space, but it's nothing like having your own gymnasium and your own cafeteria set up."

The new school building is built on the same foundation and layout as the old, but parts of the school have been reinforced to help protect against future storms.

In 2011 we toured the damage to the school. You can view that report here.
