2 Years Ago: Hurricane Irene pounds the east

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Two years ago Tuesday, Hurricane Irene pounded eastern North Carolina.

Irene made landfall early in the morning on August 27, 2011.

As a category one hurricane, Irene was slow-moving, sitting over the east for an entire day.

A 15-foot storm surge and 85-mile-per-hour winds did massive damage to homes, businesses and schools.

And after the storm passed, 35,000 North Carolinians registered with FEMA for state and federal assistance.
