Taxpayers to help new hotel rise in Durham

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

Taxpayers will chip in for a new hotel in Durham.

A new "Residence Inn by Marriott" is planned for the intersection of West Main, Watts and Morgan streets.

It will cost nearly $30 million to build the 143-room hotel.

The City council approved $1.3 million in incentives for economic development and historic preservation.

The hotel will preserve some architectural elements of the historic McPherson Hospital on the site, which the city council hopes will help tie the hotel in with the nearby Trinity Park neighborhood.

The city will pay the incentives only after the project is complete, the architecture is preserved and the property tax on the hotel is generated.
