Students fight voting reform laws

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

The backlash against Governor McCrory's voting reform law is building momentum. Now that college students are back on campus they want to make sure their constitutional right to vote is protected.

Students at East Carolina University say everyone told me they are all concerned for their rights in Pitt County and won't stop until their voices are heard; many are concerned about the events taking place in the western part of the state.

Over the weekend, ECU's Student Government President Timothy Schwan met with other presidents from across the state. They passed a resolution strongly denouncing the actions taken by board of elections in Watauga and Pasquotank.

The boards are closing polling places making it harder for people to vote. Next Tuesday, the North Carolina State Board of Elections will meet to discuss and possibly overturn those decisions.

Schwan says he's concerned and wants to make sure students don't find it tougher to vote. "When you live some place, you have a residence there, you pay your electric bill there, it's important that you are able to run for that office. It's really important for us to be heard."

Tuesday afternoon we sat down with Pitt County's Elections Director who says it's almost certain students won't get to vote early on campus this year. Dave Davis says his office has made a conscious effort to have a location at ECU, but blames the university's scheduling system for not providing a proper polling place.
