Furlough's effect drops slowly at Fort Bragg

FORT BRAGG, N.C. -

(AP) - The last furlough day at Fort Bragg was Aug. 16, but people at Fort Bragg say the effects are lingering.

The Fayetteville Observer reported (http://bit.ly/1dSD2Sn) that the unpaid days off affected about 8,500 civilian Defense Department workers at the fort.

The furloughs meant that paychecks were reduced about 20% for six weeks.

Fort Bragg spokesman Tom McCollum says most civilians at the post have returned to a normal work week. McCollum says some programs do face backlogs as service is being restored.

The Defense Department earlier this month reduced the number of furlough days from 11 to six.

McCollum says schools at Fort Bragg will not be affected.
