Polk man arrested for beating toddler

Posted: Updated:
DUNDEE, FL (WFLA) -

Polk County deputies say a 27-year-old man beat a toddler so severely the child had to be airlifted to a hospital.

Deputies arrested Douglas Shamp for hitting the 2-year-old boy across the face at least five times last week, a witness said. The toddler was potty-training and soiled himself, according to the report.

Shamp told deputies he regretted everything he did.

"There's no excuse for what I did, I don't know what happened," he told deputies.

Shamp admitted he hit the child with an open hand because the boy wouldn't stop crying or listen to him.  Shamp said he blacked out, but saw the boy's face was swollen and blood was coming from the child's mouth.

Paramedics took the boy to Tampa General Hospital.  Deputies said he didn't suffer any fractures to the neck or skull, but they saw old bruises on the child.

Officials charged Shamp with aggravated child abuse and negligent child abuse with great bodily harm. It is unclear if Shamp is related to the boy.
