GREENVILLE, N.C. -

The start of school means the start of college football season.

On Saturday, thousands of East Carolina University fans converged on Greenville for the Pirates football season opener.

Andrea and Scott Whitlow came all the way from Atlanta, G. A. for tonight's game. Adding to the excitement of the game, they are also celebrating their August birthdays.

"My birthday's Aug. 27th. My husband's turning 40 this year. We both graduated from ECU, so we wanted to come back home and celebrate with all of my buddies and enjoy a good pirate football game," said Andrea.

Joining in on their ECU birthday celebration, their friend Kelby Thorndyke, who's special day is Saturday.

While the Whitlow's are starting a new tradition, some ECU fans have annual traditions to mark the game opener.

"Every new season we break out a new hat. This year's it's white," said ECU alumni Kevin Brooks.

"First game, it's our annual night before poker tournament. Awesome bus, [and] all the other good friends that we get to see is during tailgating," said ECU alumni Dan Kallweit.

Whether celebrating new or old traditions, pirate fans are excited to show their purple and gold pride.
