Local congressman weighs in on situation in Syria

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Sunday was a long day for U.S. Representative Dennis Ross. He flew to Capitol Hill in the morning and took a flight back in the evening. Ross represents Florida's 15th district, which includes Lakeland. Ross and other lawmakers were briefed on capitol hill by members of the administration today... who laid out evidence that Syria's president was behind last month's chemical weapons attack against the Syrian people.

Ross says the news does not sound good. "There's compelling circumstantial evidence that chemical weapons were used by Assad against his own people on August 21st." Said Ross. "I think that evidence is going to be further corroborated in about a week when the UN comes back and their test results show that Sarin was actually the agent used."

That being said, Ross says he is still hesitant about a military strike. "If we confirm, without a doubt, through the UN, which has not always been the easiest to deal with, that we actually have chemical warfare going on there, then we need to take this to the level of the international community and get the support to put a stop to this." Said Ross. "I'm afraid now we're going to be kicking an ant hill and it's going to come back and bite us."

Congress is likely to vote on military action in the next few weeks. Lawmakers are scheduled to return from a summer break on Sept. 9.
