Massive gators caught in Mississippi

Posted: Updated:

Alligator hunting season opened in Mississippi this weekend with some record-breaking haul.

One giant alligator caught sunday morning in the Mississippi River weighed 727 pounds and measured 13 feet, four and a half inches long.

Its tail was 45 and a half inches in girth.

As of now, it holds a weight record for an alligator caught by a Mississippi hunter in a state hunting season.

Just an hour before, this massive gator was pulled ashore by another hunting party, breaking a previous record for weight.

It was 13 feet, five and a half inches long and weighed 723 and a half pounds.

The hunting for alligators began in Mississippi in 2005 in order to better manage their population.

After the alligators have been removed from the endangered species list in 1987, they quickly spread all over the state beyond control of wild life officials.

The state received 25,000 applications for alligator hunting permits this year.

The 2013 season will end Sept. 9.
