Durham event Sept. 20 looks to aid veterans

DURHAM, N.C. -

Veterans in need of assistance can get it Sept. 20 at the Bull City Stand Down.

The event will last from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The activities will take place at the Durham County Memorial Stadium and National Guard Armory, located at 750 Stadium Drive.

Veterans can access help with:

* housing

* Food
* basic medical and legal assistance

* employment counseling

* local health and human services

* substance abuse services

* mental health assessments

* flu shots

* mammograms

* dental issues

* haircuts, showers, and more.

The annual event focused on helping Veterans who are homeless or lack stable housing is the result of a cooperative effort among local businesses, community partners and government agencies, including the Department of Veterans Affairs.

"The entire event is dedicated to providing services and helping Veterans and their families' access available benefits," said Bull City Stand Down Chair Darryl P. Hicklen.

Free booth space is available, with an in-kind donation, to employers and other Veteran service agencies interested in providing on-site support to Veterans.
