A Hillsborough County 10th grader was arrested and charged after bringing a loaded gun to school.

Eric Fipps, 16, is a student at Middleton High School.  In a statement to police, he said he needed the gun for protection in his neighborhood.

A classmate's father said he received a text from his son saying Fipps had shown him a gun. The father immediately notified school officials.

A school resource officer located the gun in the suspect's book bag. Investigators are looking into the suspect's claim that he found the gun.

Fipps has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon on school grounds. He was transported to the juvenile assessment center.
