WASHINGTON, N.C. - The city of Washington received a $1.4 million grant to help replace a water pumping station damaged during Hurricane Irene.

The U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker announced a $1.8 million grant Wednesday. The grant will go to support disaster recovery efforts in Kentucky and North Carolina.

“The EDA grants announced today will support the rebuilding of critical infrastructure crucial to future and sustained business growth and job creation across communities in Kentucky and North Carolina,” said Secretary Pritzker.

These grants are part of a $200 million appropriation made by congress to help communities with long-term economic recovery.

According to the grant estimates, the money in Washington will help create 68 new jobs and generate $8 million in private investment.
