NC minister confirms he's running for US Senate

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Mark Harris says he hopes voters will see him as just a person rather than someone with "reverend" in front of his name as he runs for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate next year.

The Baptist minister told supporters Thursday he would run in the GOP primary with hopes of defeating Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan in November 2014.

The senior pastor of Charlotte's First Baptist says his lifetime of ministry has allowed him to put real faces with the issues of poverty and society's other challenges.

Harris is 1 of 4 people who have announced they're seeking the nomination next May. He says he will step away from duties at First Baptist in late November.
