Sexual assault reported at UNC Hospitals family house

Posted: Updated:
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

The UNC Department of Public Safety is investigating a sexual assault at a hospitality house for families of patients at UNC Hospitals.

Police say the assault happened at the SECU Family House on Mason Farm Road Friday night. SECU Family House provides housing to families with an adult patient being treated for at UNC Hospitals or its affiliated clinics.

The suspect is described as 30-40 years old, about 5-feet-4, with dark hair in a short buzz cut. He was last seen wearing khaki pants and a dark short-sleeved shirt.

According to police, he has tattoos on his inner and outer left forearm and another tattoo on his upper right arm. He has a small scar on the left side of his chest.

The SECU Family House said there was no break-in, so it is believed the suspect was let in or the victim knew the suspect.

In a statement, the Family House said, "We are grateful for the expertise and assistance of the UNC Department of Public Safety in light of the alleged assault that occurred at Family House on Friday evening. Our hearts and prayers are with the family involved."

UNC students were notified of the incident by the university's automated alert system.

Anyone with information is asked to call the UNC Department of Public Safety at (919) 843-6165 or Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC Crime Stoppers at (919) 942-7515. Information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers online at www.crimestoppers-chcunc.org.
