NC begins work on Wright Memorial Bridge

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC - Work is starting to smooth the ride over the Wright Memorial Bridge at the North Carolina coast.

Officials with the state Transportation Department say that beginning Monday, westbound lanes of the bridge over the Currituck Sound will be resurfaced with a latex-modified concrete that will provide a smooth riding surface. Seals on expansion joints on the bridge will be replaced. The joints let a bridge expand and contract with the weather.

The work will take place only when the air and surface are at certain temperatures, but DOT says the westbound lanes will reopen no later than May 15, 2014. Two-way traffic will be shifted to the eastbound bridge.

The state awarded a $6 million contract for the work in June.
