Lunch Break: Is your lunch hurting your wallet?

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Lunch. It is usually part of our daily routine, but if you are anything like me – going out for lunch is almost a daily occurrence.

Over the past few months I have been noticing how going out to lunch has been causing a lot of money to go out of my wallet. I recently averaged up my lunch expenses for the last few weeks and I found that it was costing me roughly $10 a day. Some days were a $6 drive through at McDonalds, but some were a $12 sandwich and beverage from a restaurant in uptown Greenville.

My wife and I are saving for a vacation in December, so today instead of hitting up Chick-fil-a, I hit the grocery store that is right across from Channel 9. I know we have been running reports on how grocery stores prices are on the rise, but I was shocked at how many affordable portable options were available.

My quick 5 minute trip yielded 11 items. This included 5 main dishes with plenty of crackers and snacks to supplement the quick meals. The total came to $22.39.

Today’s lunch was a Campbell’s Chunky Sirloin soup bowl, Better Cheddars, and an individually wrapped pack on Nutter Butters. I didn’t say I was going for healthy, but I’m sure this is better than a burger and fries. If my shopping trip last the week, I will have saved over $25 this week without coupon cutting or skimping.

Do you do anything special to cut lunch cost? Share with me in the comments.
