ECU, Robeson leaders reveal dental center plans

LUMBERTON, N.C. - Leaders in Robeson County have joined the East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine in announcing plans to build a center designed to help low-income residents and dental students.

A community service learning center is to be built by ECU next to the Robeson County Health Department on land donated by the county.

Fourth-year dental students and dental residents will get to develop patient-care techniques and learn how to operate a community practice. The center will have 16 chairs and will employ local staff members. Up to five students will be at the center for nine-week rotations.

The school said the $3 million, 7,700-square-foot center is 1 of as many as 10 which ECU plans to build across the state. Two centers are already open in Ahoskie and Elizabeth City.
