Child Support Take Back

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

A Pitt County Sheriff's Office program is working to help find parents who don't pay their child support.

The Department of Agriculture says it costs $240,000 to raise a child from birth to 18 and if parents don't pay their half, it often falls on the government.

Tarshia Cogdell is just one Pitt County mother struggling with her finances. She has a 4-year-old daughter and an 11-year-old son. Her daughter's father hasn't given her any money for child support and needs help now.

"I have bills; I need to take care of my kids. Greenville Utilities isn't going to wait for the child support to post."

Cogdell recently turned to the Pitt County Sheriff's Office's special Child Support Unit. It's dedicated to holding parents accountable for what they owe.

"Every day we are serving papers to establish a new case, serving a paper to bring someone to court and/or trying to locate those that missed their court dates." Deputy Eric Todd said.

On average the unit deals with at least 80 delinquent parents. Last year they collected $14 million in monies owed and each month they highlight five parents to help increase that number.

"The kids, they didn't ask to be here. They're here and they've got to have monies and stuff to survive and it takes two in this world to really make it happen." Sgt. Doug Peterson said.

Cogdell says she is pleased with the unit's help and says she is on track to get her first child support payment in 4 years.
