Scuba diver finds 1974 class ring, delivers it to its cancer-stricken owner

CHARLESTON, S.C. -

A special treasure is now back in the hands of its rightful owner.

Three weeks ago scuba diver Brian Tovin found a priceless piece of jewelry hidden 40 feet underwater in a gravel bed- a 1974 College of Charleston class ring with the initials R.L.P. engraved on the inside.

So he did a little investigating and through the college and social media, found out it belonged to Robert Levaughn Phillips.

One day back in 1974, Phillips and his future wife decided to go out and spend the day on the river.  But Phillips lost the ring opening a bottle a beer.  He says he never got over losing that ring; it was the last gift his mother ever gave him.  She died of cancer years later.

Now 39 years after that, it's Robert Phillips who is dying of cancer.  He doesn't have long to live.  Brian Tovin delivered the ring to him personally and he made it just in time.

Phillips says he feels his mother had a hand in bringing back this long lost treasure.
