CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Dad takes to Facebook to get back his son’s stolen bike

CALIFORNIA -

A California man who had his son's bike stolen right off his front porch used a very unique technique to get it back.

Phil Coats had the surveillance video showing a guy marching onto his front porch and riding off on his son's bike.

Most people probably would've stopped with a police report but Coats figured the misdemeanor theft wasn't exactly cops' top priority.  So the software engineer came up with an idea: use social media with a twist.

"I was gonna make flyers but then I thought, hey I'll just start a Facebook page and pretend to be this guy,” explained Coats.

"So I said I'm the Dixon Bike Thief.  You better watch out ‘cause I'll steal your bikes.  I'll steal anything."

It worked.  Within 24 hours the page had over 10,000 views.  And about a month later, the bike appeared back on Coats' front lawn with a little wear and tear.  Of course, it was all caught once again on his surveillance system.
