NEW BERN, N.C. -

A town commissioner in Craven County is facing charges for growing marijuana and larceny.

Bridgeton Commissioner Charles Freeman made his first court appearance Thursday morning.

Freeman was arrested Wednesday after Bridgeton police spotted him in surveillance video, stealing from the Hess station.

Surveillance caught Freeman taking candy and a drink from the store without paying for it.

When police went to his house to question him, they noticed marijuana plants.

He's facing several charges including misdemeanor larceny, felony possession with intent to sell marijuana and manufacturing marijuana.

Freeman bonded out of jail Wednesday. He's expected back in court December 5-th.

He still holds his commissioner seat.
