Troopers are investigating a crashed that killed two people in Onslow County Thursday.
The accident happened shortly before noon on U.S. 17, south of Jacksonville. Troopers tell us three people were in the car when it crashed just past Murrill Hill Road.
Trooper Matos tells us a man in his 70's was driving the car when he lost control, swerved to the outside lane, over-corrected and then ran off the road onto a grass median and hit a tree. The car struck the tree on the driver's side door.
We're told a couple, both in their 70's, were in the front seat of the car and died in the crash.A 40-year-old male was in the backseat and was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Troopers are still investigating the crash but say they believe the car was traveling at an excessive speed. An autopsy will be done on the driver to determine if he had a medical condition that may have contributed to the crash.
The northbound lanes of U.S. were closed for almost two hours as crews worked to clear the scene.
The names of the victims have not yet been released.
Authorities are expected to release the results of autopsies on the two bodies recovered from the fiery crash that killed "Fast & Furious" actor Paul Walker and his friend.
"Fast & Furious" star Paul Walker was killed by injuries from both the impact and subsequent fire when the Porsche his friend was driving smashed into a light pole and tree, according to an autopsy released Wednesday.
