Vandalism turns Fayetteville Terry Sanford bulldog purple and gold

Posted: Updated:
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Vandalism discovered at Terry Sanford High School on Friday morning appeared to be a sign of a sports rivalry gone too far.

Staff and students found the vandalism on a statue of the school's bulldog mascot at the west end of the Terry Sanford football field. Half of the bulldog was painted purple. The other half was painted a shade of yellow often called "varsity gold." One side of the cube-shaped base had the letters "JBHS" written in purple paint.

Terry Sanford was scheduled to host a football game against Jack Britt High School – which has purple and gold school colors – on Friday night.

The vandalism was cleaned off by 11 a.m.

Cumberland County Schools spokeswoman Patricia Hollingsworth said the game would be played as scheduled. She also said the vandalism was reported to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, which has jurisdiction over all the county's public schools.

Debbie Tanna, the spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, did not respond Friday to an email requesting information about a possible investigation.

The Jack Britt Buccaneers won the Friday night football game against the Terry Sanford Bulldogs by a score of 50-31.
