Airman charged in ECU student off-campus attack

GREENVILLE, N.C. -

A U.S. airman is facing assault charges after police say he attacked an East Carolina University student.

Greenville Police say a 21-year-old ECU student was walking home on Fourth Street when a man attacked her with a knife. Police say that man is 23-year-old Jacob Hollingsworth. 

Hollingsworth is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting injury. He is in the Pitt County Detention Center under a $200,000 bond.  His first court appearance was Tuesday morning.

Police say the victim screamed for help and started fighting Hollingsworth.  Police say some bystanders heard her and came out to  help. Police say the bystanders and the victim fought off Hollingsworth and knocked him out.

Police say the victim had several cuts to her upper body as result of the attack. Police say she was  transported and released from Vidant Medical Center.

The suspect, Jacob Hollingsworth, was also transported to Vidant. He was served with arrest warrants after he was treated. 

Police say Hollingsworth is an active member of the U.S Air U.S..ce assigned to the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

His next court appearance is set for October 10th.
