Elizabeth City State phone calls questioned

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Officials at Elizabeth City State University officials are investigating why they had more than $100,000 in phone calls to Senegal in Africa in the past 27 months.

A spokeswoman said the school would not comment while reviewing the report (http://bit.ly/1fuhwE8 ) by the News & Observer of Raleigh that thousands of calls have been made.

State officials have not provided further details about where the calls originated.

School spokeswoman Kesha Williams said Chancellor Charles Becton has asked a campus team to investigate the calls. Williams says school officials don't know how long the investigation will last.

The newspaper reported that documents and interviews indicate the calls were part of a program that helped write and provide a series of textbooks for schools in Senegal between 2009 and 2012.
