TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

The evolving situation playing out in Nairobi, Kenya hit very close to home for one Tampa Bay area woman. Her parents just relocated to Kenya a month ago.

Sandra Bentil, a former journalist,  has been monitoring the story very closely.

"It's chilling," she said.

Less than a month ago her parents moved to Nairobi. Her father took a teaching job at a university there. She said she was more nervous than they were watching the events unfold.

Days before the storming of the mall, her parents had visited the shopping center. She said, they aren't concerned.

"I think they feel they're safe most of the time. I think they feel they're in good hands. I haven't had a chance to go in depth with them, but I have you know mentioned to them just in case this happens again what's your strategy," she said.

Both her parents are doing well and said they watched the violence play out on television.

"They're nowhere near the area. The whole place is fine, the mood is fine people are just avoiding that part of town, " Bentil said.

Now Bentil's  job is to try to shield her very inquisitive 6-year-old son from knowing about what's going on in Nairobi and worrying about his grandparents - who are so far away.

"I am sneaking peeks at it because I didn't want Isaiah to be scared," Bentil said.
