Indictment: Greenville shooter targeted victims because of race, religion

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

The man responsible for the Greenville shooting in June that injured several people racially targeted his victims.

That's according to an indictment filed on Monday, September 23.

23-year-old Lakim Anthony Faust, now at Central Prison in Raleigh, tried to kill four of his victims. They are identified in the indictment as Carroll Oakes, Vernon Leggett, Timothy Edwards and Haywood Whichard Jr.

Jurors say Faust unlawfully, willfully and feloniously attempted to kill and murder his victims. The indictment also says, "the offense for which the defendant stands convicted was committed against a victim because of the victim's race, color, religion, nationality, or country of origin."

In July, police seized several items from Faust's apartment. Officers found a copy of the "Qur'an," along with several other books and publications on the Muslim culture.

They also found several boxes of shotgun shells, a gun lock, and the receipt for the shotgun he used.

It is customary for defendants to appear before a judge 10 days after an indictment is filed---that's where their charges are aloud and the defendant is asked to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty. At this time it is unclear if his attorney will waive that appearance.
