The American Red Cross is assisting first responders working to contain a fire in historic downtown Georgetown that has engulfed several businesses and residential buildings.
Georgetown County Emergency Management has requested Red Cross' assistance in providing breakfast and lunch to 100 first responders. Red Cross will continue to be on the scene to provide hydration and food to first responders as long as needed. Red Cross client case workers and mental health professionals are also on the scene to assist residents that have been affected by the fire.
"The American Red Cross is always on call to assist as needed during emergencies," said Nanci Conley, executive director, American Red Cross, Coastal SC Chapter. "Our local first responders do incredible work every day, and we are honored to help when we can."
Emergencies and disasters like the fire today reinforce the importance of having a strong volunteer program. Because of continuous disaster emergency training at the Coastal SC Chapter, volunteers were fully prepared to provide immediate assistance to these first responders when called upon.
