Red Cross assisting crews battling blaze in downtown Georgetown

Posted: Updated:
GEORGETOWN, S.C. (PRESS RELEASE) -

The American Red Cross is assisting first responders working to contain a fire in historic downtown Georgetown that has engulfed several businesses and residential buildings.

Georgetown County Emergency Management has requested Red Cross' assistance in providing breakfast and lunch to 100 first responders. Red Cross will continue to be on the scene to provide hydration and food to first responders as long as needed. Red Cross client case workers and mental health professionals are also on the scene to assist residents that have been affected by the fire.

"The American Red Cross is always on call to assist as needed during emergencies," said Nanci Conley, executive director, American Red Cross, Coastal SC Chapter. "Our local first responders do incredible work every day, and we are honored to help when we can."

Emergencies and disasters like the fire today reinforce the importance of having a strong volunteer program. Because of continuous disaster emergency training at the Coastal SC Chapter, volunteers were fully prepared to provide immediate assistance to these first responders when called upon.

The Red Cross is always in need of volunteers. To register for Red Cross volunteer orientations, please visit redcross.org/Coastal SC and click on volunteer or call (843) 662-8121.

Because of our trained disaster volunteers and financial assistance from the community, Red Cross has been able to help more than 3,700 individuals and 1,200 families affected by disasters in the Palmetto SC region just since January. On average, the American Red Cross, Palmetto SC Region responds to a disaster every 6.5 hours. The Palmetto SC Region is made up of seven Red Cross chapters <http://www.redcross.org/sc/myrtle-beach/palmetto-region/locations> that span 35 counties of South Carolina.

The American Red Cross relies on financial support from the community in order to have the proper resources available to fulfill its mission 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

You can help your neighbors recover from disasters by making a financial contribution to the American Red Cross today by visiting Redcross.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.
